Professor Fethi Mansouri, UNESCO Chair for Comparative Research in Cultural Diversity and Social Justice, presented his paper on ‘An Overview of Islam and Muslims in Australia’ at the Australian National University’s Centre for Arab & Islamic Studies’ (Middle East & Central Asia) Political Islam Seminars on 27 November 2018.
He provided an overview of Muslims in the ‘West’ and beyond the area traditionally considered as ‘the Muslim world’, as well as specifically examined the case of the Muslim community in Australia. Concerns in/among some of the community, such as inter-generational differences, and changes over time in the profile of Muslim immigration; and the question of radicalisation of Australian Muslims were also addressed.
